An object’s appearance impacts our relationship with it, as it constitutes the first contact we have with a foreign body. Matter and materials form the envelope, the visible part of entities. Over time, this way is set to evolve, transform, change. This alteration, known as wear, appears gradually and as such leaves many traces. As such, this dissertation will seek to study our relationship with these traces. It will begin by identifying the poetic, sentimental, historical and societal dimensions of wear, before focusing on its artistic potential and the impact of its consideration on architectural design.
