“Hear that fine, continuous noise, which is silence. Listen to what you hear when nothing can be heard."As modern people, are we still capable of following this advice from Paul Valéry? To listen to silence? In a world such as ours, we have to build tall walls to keep out the noise in order to restore silence to its former glory. In the past, people would savour the depth and delights of silence, something conducive to contemplation, listening, meditation, daydreaming and creative focus. In our climes, silence is sought out, fought over, conquered, stolen and lost. Like a nugget of gold in a noisy, chaotic world, it is nevertheless essential to our humanity.
