This dissertation offers and explanation of the persistent fantasy of submerged architecture, in literature and film as well as contemporary architectural projects. It is the culmination of a study that initially focused on rising water levels, before meandering into a hypothesis on this fantasy’s historiographical and mythological source. We will ultimately learn that these images of submerged ruins can be nothing more than utopian: once realised, this entire imaginary world crumbles.
