Artisanal creation is a relationship between nature and the spiritual objects that enrich our existence. The environment and way of life in the village of Xie Ma Qiao, where ceramic artists once gathers, have radically changed with the evolution of history and the rise of mechanisation. To rise to this challenge and recover the now-lost local identity and cultural confidence, we need to reconsider the areas where crafts are practised and offer new and innovative spaces in line with the contemporary spirit and expectations. I wanted to develop a symbiotic space that helps perpetuate the memory of a material, Taihu stone, as well as its shaping, by reviving the techniques, methods and ancestral knowledge of craftspeople.
